The Gummy Smile (Esthetic Crown Lengthening)
When a smile shows teeth that are short and stubby because the gums are too swollen and thick, the patient has what is called a “gummy smile” (See Exhibit 1). This may be the result of a genetic excess of gum tissue or mouth breathing especially during sleep. Poor oral hygiene and certain medications may also be causes. The overgrown gum tissue creates deep spaces around the teeth which may be prone to infection. Psychological problems due to the unattractive smile can be a real concern for some. A relatively short procedure exposes the natural shape and beauty of teeth that have been previously hidden from view. The dramatic changes the patient may experience are often incredible and life-changing.

Grafting (The Receding Gumline)
Exposure of the tooth root surface may lead to an unattractive smile, sensitivity, or a health problem. The causes of and problems with the receding gumline are several, and may include overzealous tooth brushing, clenching or grinding of the teeth, orthodontic treatment, or genetic discrepancies. Receding gums may alter an individual’s self esteem and place the involved teeth at increased risk for premature loss.
Treatment restores the health of the tooth, makes it easier to clean, and can dramatically improve the appearance of the smile. This is accomplished by grafting of tissue obtained from either the patient’s roof of the mouth (See Exhibit 2) or from donor tissue banks (See Exhibit 3). This plastic surgery procedure creates a harmonious and beautiful smile and returns the teeth to a state of health.
