What is a Periodontist and What does he do………..
A Periodontist is a dentist who, after 4 years of dental education, has chosen to concentrate his practice to the specific area of dentistry known as Periodontology. This requires specialized training, which generally takes three additional years of training beyond dental school. The specialty of Periodontics deals with diseases and conditions of the tissues-gums (gingiva) and bone – which surround and support the teeth or their artificial substitutes. The most common condition with which the Periodontist deals with is infection of the bone structure, referred to as a periodontitis, or pyorrhea. He also utilizes special oral plastic surgery techniques to manage recession or loss of gum tissue, assist the general dentist in restoring badly broken down teeth and improve the appearance or esthetics of the front teeth and gums. The Periodontist is also trained in preparation of the jaw bone for and placement, of dental implants. He will also manage certain types of lesions or tumors of the gums, lips, cheeks or tongue.
